relations as before. One cannot ake the law
out of the events and make it into a lasting
thing.

Memories, character, lasting aims, habitual
routine, responsibility, planning ahead for
future self-maintenance, the attempt to keep
up, from self-respect, a consistent ideal stan-
dard of conduct, etc. are often said to point
to a permanent being in us. All we really ob-
serve is that some mental acts, and some ob-
jects, occur repeatedly in a very similar
form. The rest is gratuitous.
